How to Use Programmable NFC Tags
Using programmable NFC tags is surprisingly simple—even if you’ve never tried them before. These tiny, battery-free tags can trigger smart actions with a single tap. Whether you're sharing contact info, automating tasks, or linking to content, NFC tags make life easier and more efficient. Here's how to start using them today.
Check if Your Smartphone Supports NFC
Before you begin, confirm your phone has NFC capabilities. Most newer smartphones do.
Android users: Go to Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > NFC. If you see it, you're good to go.
iPhone users: NFC is built-in from iPhone 7 onward. If you’re using iPhone XS or newer, you can enjoy background scanning without needing a special app.
Download an App to Program Your NFC Tag
To customize your NFC tag, you’ll need a free mobile app. We recommend NFC Tools for both Android and iOS. It’s easy to use and packed with functionality.
Install NFC Tools from the App Store or Google Play.
Open the app and choose what you want the tag to do—like open a website, share your Wi-Fi password, or send someone a text message.
Select “Write” and then hold your phone close to the tag.
Done! Your NFC tag is now programmed.
Write Custom Actions with Just a Tap
NFC tags let you trigger almost anything with one tap:
Open your website or portfolio
Launch a music playlist
Share contact details or social media handles
Connect guests to your Wi-Fi network
Automate smart home actions like turning on lights or adjusting the thermostat
This functionality turns simple stickers, cards, or keychains into smart tools—without needing an app to read them.
Erase or Reprogram NFC Tags Anytime
Want to change the tag’s action later? No problem—it’s fully rewritable.
Open the NFC Tools app again.
Tap “Erase” to clear old content.
Tap “Write” and choose a new action.
Hold your phone to the tag—and just like that, it's updated.
This makes NFC tags incredibly reusable and eco-friendly. A single tag can serve endless purposes.
Start Using NFC Tags in Everyday Life
Here’s where things get fun. Once your tags are set up, you can stick or attach them wherever you need fast access:
Place one on your desk to launch your workday playlist
Stick one by the door to turn off lights as you leave
Attach one to your phone case to share your business card instantly
Put one on a product box to offer instructions or support links
They're small, subtle, and endlessly useful.
